Media Feature: Panelist on The Asian Digital Mum (April 2014)
Empowering the Digital Mum: Insights from the Asian Digital Mum Panel
This morning, I had the distinct honor of participating as a panelist in the Asian Digital Mum Panel, organized by Tickled Media, to discuss the findings of their latest survey, The Asian Digital Mum Report. The panel, moderated by Simon Kahn, Chief Marketing Officer – Asia Pacific at Google, included esteemed professionals: Meri Rosich, Founder of Quality Time Lab; Holly Lam, Campaign Specialist at eBay Enterprise; and Mantazh Khanna, Co-founder of PS It’s Healthy.
Our discussion centered on the evolving behaviors of Asian mothers in the digital space, particularly regarding shopping and decision-making. As the report indicates, Asian mums have become increasingly digital-first, with over 80% increasing their internet usage after becoming mothers.
Over ten thousand Asian mums from Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia took part in this survey. This is the FIRST time such a survey had been conducted on Asian mums. The objective was to identify the most frequent online habits of Asian mums, the trends in their purchasing behavior and attitude and how marketers can effectively target this core group of highly coveted audience.
Key Insights into Digital Mum Behaviors:
📱 Mobile-First Approach
Asian mothers predominantly use mobile devices to access information, with 82% seeking ways to improve their family’s quality of life via smartphones and tablets.
💬 Influence of Social Media
Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube play a significant role in product discovery and decision-making, with 85% of mums using these platforms to research brands.
👩👩👧👦 Community Engagement
Online parenting communities are invaluable—60% of Malaysian mothers actively participate in such groups for peer support, tips, and reviews.
💸 Value-Driven Purchasing
Product quality and price remain top priorities, with 90% of Malaysian mothers prioritizing quality and 77% valuing cost-effectiveness.
🔍 Research-Oriented Shopping
Before making online purchases, Southeast Asian mums engage in detailed research—reading articles, comparing prices, and checking reviews.
These insights underscore the importance of authenticity, community engagement, and value in reaching and resonating with the modern digital mum. Participating in this panel was not only an honor but also an eye-opening experience on how mothers today are driving the digital economy with intention and insight.
