Blog Train: Dear Mummy…
Do you have a box filled with cards and knick-knacks that are only valuable to you?
I have one.
Inside the box, you will find all sorts of handmade cards, scribbled drawings, perhaps even baby teeth and hospital tags. I store these items more carefully than my precious jewels. To me, these are treasures worth their weight in gold as they are tokens of my children and their dedications to me.
Every mum loves to feel appreciated.
I am a lucky mom. I don’t have to wait for Mother’s Day to feel appreciated. There are days when my kids surprise me with little tokens of appreciation. For example, one year my son came home with a huge coconut for me. He was on his way home from school when he saw the gardener in our condominium cutting down coconuts from the trees. He asked the gardener for a huge one because his mother likes coconuts.
Or this year when my daughter gave me a packet of prawn crackers she bought with her own money, simply because she knew I like to snack on them while writing. Then there are the sudden tight hugs and “I love you, mum.” Simply because she loves me.
Sometimes when I feel a little low on my “mummy barometer”, I take these cards out to read. They give me great comfort and reminds me of my job as their mum — to love them unconditionally. These cards get better and better each year. From simple heart-shaped cut-out with the simple scrawls “I Love You” and handprints, they have graduated to more intricate cut-outs and creative drawings. The cards also chart the growing developments of my children and the feelings he or she has of me.
Thank You Mummy For A Great Childhood!
I hate to say it, but I will feel very sad if my kids do not do something for me on Mother’s Day. When the kids were young, their father took the initiative to plan and remind the kids about Mother’s Day. But as the kids got older, they were able to churn out their own plans. For example on Mother’s Day this year, I received a certificate from my son and a card that (according to hubby) took my daughter a painstaking TWO hours to create. That morning, I was pampered with a massage and a mani-pedi courtesy of my two young service staff.
Most of the time, the messages in the cards echo the same message in different forms: “I LOVE YOU, MOM!”
This year, I was gratified when the kids told me that they feel they have a great childhood. THAT, I feel is the highest commendation a mom could get.
This is us at Tony’s Pizza in Bugis Junction later in the evening on Mother’s Day. It was a great place to hang out. The review will be out shortly.
Do you ever wonder what you kids really think of you as a mom? In honor of this post, I asked my kids if they will be willing to leave a short message for me. They agreed. I set up my phone on a selfie-stick cum camera stand and here is what they say (uncensored):
