Animated series on television targeted at boys aged 3-6 years old are aplenty - Bob the Builder, Thomas the Train, Handy Manny, Little Bill, Go Diego Go, Special Agent Oso, Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Phineas and Ferb… You get the picture.
In contrast, you can count the cartoons featuring girls as central figures in one hand – Dora The Explorer, Strawberry Shortcake, and Nihao Kailan released by Nick. Jr. a couple of years ago. So, I’m excited to share with you the new release of Doc McStuffins, an original Disney Junior series featuring a lovable six-year-old girl who is the Dr. Dolittle of the toy world.
Known fondly as Doc, she has the ability to talk to and heal wounded toys and stuffed animals from her doctor’s clinic, a.k.a her playhouse. But Doc doesn’t do all the mending alone. She is helped by her four assistants – an overly proud stuffed dragon (Stuffy), a stuffed lamb who loves to give cuddles (Lambie), a jolly hippo receptionist (Hallie) and a hypochondriac stuffed snowman (Chilly).
The series models a strong sense of community and the importance of lending a helping hand, or paw, when people and stuffed animals need it most. Each episode of Doc McStuffins includes original songs performed by the characters. And at the end of each episode, Doc dispenses advice ala Doctor Oz style, to your child about staying healthy and maintaining hygienic habits like washing your hands regularly or drinking lots of water on a hot day.
To celebrate your child’s love of his/her toys, Disney Junior will feature toy-themed shows all day long on Monday, beginning with Toy Story 3 at 10am. So, remember to catch it or record and watch it at a later time!
